When it comes to total immersion, headphones are good but surround sound is better. Take the recent PC hit Doom 3. With creatures attacking you from all sides, usually in the dark, a surround sound set can make all the difference between quickly pin-pointing a zombie and having your character relieved of its head. And if youΓÇÖre going to go for a full-on set-up, you may as well go for the best. The Logitech Z-680s are THX-certified, which means theyΓÇÖve been approved by the sound-quality-obsessed boffins at Lucasfilm. They also contain an integrated Dolby Digital and DTS decoding system so you can hook them up to a PC or a console. How good are they? Well, to get technical, theyΓÇÖre the monkeyΓÇÖs nuts. Sound output is seriously beefy and of a quality that you would normally expect from a far more expensive home-cinema setup. The only downside is that you will need plenty of space for all the speakers and the patience to wire them up. Once you have heard them in full flow, however, your ears ΓÇô and your game characterΓÇÖs head ΓÇô will appreciate the investment.
